Background
Established in 1995 by The California Wellness Foundation, the Center for Health Improvement initially served as a public policy and education center for California. Since then, CHI's focus has broadened beyond California. Today, it is an independent, national, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving population health and encouraging healthy behaviors. CHI emphasizes primary and secondary prevention and community-based health promotion to attack the underlying causes of America's increasingly unhealthy population. CHI provides comprehensive support to help public and private organizations across the country effect lasting change in their efforts to prevent disease and promote health.
CHI has built a reputation for working in partnership with government, businesses, advocacy and community organizations, philanthropic foundations, and educators to help them strengthen their capacity to improve the quality and value of health care and enhance public health.
Over the years, CHI's work has focused on using evidence-based research in translating theory into practice at the leading edge of:
- Children's Health
- Infectious Disease Prevention
- Worksite Wellness
- Health Care Quality
- Chronic Disease Management
- Healthy Aging
- Health Policy
CHI is led by President and CEO Peter S. Reed, PhD, MPH, and directed by a seven-member board of directors of nationally and internationally recognized experts in the fields of health promotion and disease prevention.
